EVENTS FOR PROFESSIONALS
The Latino Alzheimer's & Memory Disorders Allinace launched a campaign to help better educate those who care for people suffering from the disease, focusing on the Hispanic community, since that group is more likely to suffer from this disease
To increase awareness about its efforts, the Alliance held a fundraiser in Chicago. The event was attended by Latino leaders, including the news director of Univision Chicago, Marisol Seda. Seda served as co host and shared with the audience that about 500 thousand Latinos in the United States suffer from Alzheimer's. The event was attended by nutritionist, Lindsay Sawyer, who spoke of the importance of eating healthy and doing so could help prevent many ailments, including Alzheimer's. Neuropsychologist, Mary Marquine of Rush University Medical Center attended the event to answer questions about the disease.
The event also featured the first Nora Award, which each year will be awarded to a woman who has excelled in their struggle to raise awareness about Alzheimer's in Latinos. The award is named after the mother of Luisa Echevarria, director of community affairs for Univision Chicago. who died recently after a long battle with the disease. Echevarria is part of the national board of the American Alliance for Alzheimer's, and for years has devoted time to help Latinos learn more about how to prevent Alzheimer's.
